The School of ElectricPower Engineering was founded in mid-to late 1970s. After nearly 40 years of development, it has established an excellent education and research reputation in Yunnan. The School has so far cultivated large quantities of qualified talents. More than 7000 students have graduated. Many graduates have become chief engineers or general managers of Yunnan’s power related industrial companies.

The School now located at Chengong campus of Kunming University of Science and Technology, comprises of Department of Electrical Engineering and Department Water conservancy and hydropower engineering. There are 3 undergraduate programs, Electrical Engineering and its Automation, hydraulic and hydro-power engineering, Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering. In respect of graduate education, two first-level disciplines are currently available, Electrical Engineering and Water Conservancy Engineering. Of them, both Electrical Engineering and hydraulic & hydro-power engineering were enlisted as the key disciplines in Yunnan and National characteristic specialties.

Faculty of Electric Power Engineering includes two departments: department of electrical engineering and department of hydraulic engineering. There are one Yunnan engineering center of smart grid, one provincial innovation team of power systems protection and control, one KUST innovation team, one KUST key laboratory, one experimental teaching center, and 12 laboratories. One national quality course has been constructed. Currently, there are about 1800 full time on-campus undergraduate students, 500 postgraduate students (including postgraduate students in Engineering Master degree), and 20 international students at all levels. The faculty has a teaching team with strong style, high academic level and reasonable structure. There are 93 teaching staffs in total, including 72 full-time teachers employed (Full-time counselors included), among which there are 11 professors, 19 associate professors. Doctoral degrees are held by 35 teachers. There are one doctoral supervisor and 34 master advisors.

TheSchool of Electric Power Engineering also made enormous achievements in the scientific research aspect. In the recent years the faculties with this school have undertaken 16 state-sponsored research projects and many other research projects. The school faculties have received more than 20 provincial or ministerial awards for achievements in scientific researches. Based on these researches, over 600 technical papers have been published, among which over 200 have been included in the Science Citation Index (SCI) or Engineering Index (EI).
