1.    Introduction to subject

The subjectof electric power engineering plays a very significant role in sciencedevelopment. The application of electric power engineering involves industry,agriculture, transportation, science, education, defense, human life and et al.It effects the economy development extensively. So the electrification has beenregarded as the greatest achievement of engineering technology in the 20thcentury. On the promotion of demand and interdiscipline, the subject ofelectric power engineering is presenting the active development trends. Themain trends are as following:

(1)The generation, transmission, distribution and application of electricity hasbeen developed to effectiveness, flexibility, safety, reliability, environmentfriendly and resource conservation. The current research focuses on theeffective transition and application of renewable energy such as wind and solarenergy.

(2) The new appearance, theory, model andapplication of the interaction of electromagnetic field and materials havebecome the important basis and innovative resources, especially the applicationof extraordinary environment and extreme situation.

(3)With the penetration of informationtechnology, the Internet technology, intelligence technology, nanometertechnology and biology technology promote the overlap of the subject ofelectric power engineering that brings new energy to the development ofelectric power engineering.

(4)The development of new electrical materials advanced the development of new electricaldevice, equipment and system.

2. Contentof subject

(1)Object of study

The subject studies on electromagnetic phenomenon and regularity and itsapplication in human’s production and life.

(2)Theory

The general basic theoryincludes electromagnetic field theory, electromagnetictheory and electromagneticmeasuring theory.

(3)Basic knowledge

The basicknowledge includes following aspects:

A. Humanities and social science: politics,economy, management and foreign languages;

B. Nature science: math, physics,materials, chemistry and biology.

C. Subject technology: electromagnetic field theory, electromagnetictheory, electromagnetic measuring theory, analog electronics technique, digitalelectronic technique, automatic control theory, signal and system, electromechanics,power electronics, engineering mechanics, mechanical drawing, information technology and application.

D. Specialized knowledge:master related knowledge of 5 research areas, which are electricalmachineryandappliance, electric power and automation, high voltage and insulationtechnology, power electronics and power drives, electrical engineering theoryand new technology. The details are showed in the scope of subject.

(4) Methodsof study

The studymethods of electric power engineering are same as the general relatedengineering subjects. Theory analysis is the basic research method with manymath tools. The validity of theory analysis is proven by analog simulation and experimentalresearch.

2.     Scope of subject

The first-leveldiscipline, electric power engineering, has 5 research areas: electricalmachineryandappliance, electric power and automation,high voltage and insulation technology, power electronics and power drives,electrical engineering theory and new technology.

(1)           Electrical machinery and appliance

Study on thetheory, design, manufacture, operation and control law of electrical machinery,electrical equipment, electromagnetism and electromechanicalequipment. Serve for the department of transportation, machinery, electronics,communication, computer, aerospace metallurgy and et al.

The specificstudy contents include: the basic theory of electrical machinery and equipment,computer analysis and stimulation, the design and manufacture of electricalmachinery and equipment, the integration technology of electrical machinery andequipment, and the control, operation, failure diagnosis, reliability of electricalmachinery and equipment, the modern test methods of electrical machinery andequipment, the electromechanical power system and control, the theory andapplication of arc and electric contact, the new and smart electrical machineryand equipment.

(2) Electric power and automation

Study on thetheory of generation, transformation, transmission, distribution and control,the theory and technology of planning, characteristics analysis, operationmanagement and protect control of electric power system. Supply the safe, highquality, economic and environmental electricity for consumers.

The specificcontents include: planning of electric power system, analysis and stimulationof electric power system, the operation, dispatch and control of electric powersystem, the protection of electric power system, the new transmission anddistributed generation, the power market and operation, the powerinformatization and automatization, the power security technology andmanagement, the energy conservation and accumulation of electric power system, tractionpower supply theory and technology, isolated power system theory andtechnology.

(3)High voltage and insulation technology

Study on highvoltage and insulation theory, measurement, insulation structure, overvoltageand protection, and their application of science technology in electricindustry and other areas.

The specificcontents include: discharge of dielectric medium and plasma technology, thetheory of insulation breakdown, pulse power techniques, the modern measurementtechniques of high voltage and insulation, insulation supervising anddiagnostic techniques, modern insulation structure of electric equipment andnew materials, overvoltage and protection, electromagnetic transientcharacteristics and analysis techniques, the characteristics of transmissionelectromagnetic environment and improvement measure, extra-high voltage system andinsulation, insulation materials and test theory of electric equipmentinsulation, the application of extra-voltage, high current technique and highvoltage techniques in agriculture industry and life science.

(4)Power electronics and power drives

Study on thetopology, modeling and control of converter; new power electronic device,passive component, the integration and application of power electronic system.Based on modern control theory, information techniques, communicationtechnology and intellectual technology, achieve the effective use ofelectromagnetic energy, high-powered electric drive and motion control andeffective transformation of renewable energy.

   The specific contentsinclude: power electronic devices and power integrated circuit, powerelectronic circuit, the modeling and control of power electronic system, thestimulation and design of power electronic circuit and equipment, electricaldrive and control techniques, reliability technology of power electronic, theapplication of power electronic techniques in power system and electrictraction, integrated techniques of power electronic system, transmissiontechniques of wireless and non-contact energy, electromagnetic compatibility ofpower electronic system.

(5) Electrical theory and new technology

Study on electricnetwork, electromagnetic field and electromagnetic measurements. Study on thenew electrical theory, method and application based on new theory and materials.With the development of electric power engineering subject, the contents ofelectrical theory and new technology has became wider and wider. The newgrowing point of subject which is the overlap of electric power engineeringwith information, the internet of things, intelligentization, nanotechnologyand biology has improved the development of the subject electric powerengineering.

The specificcontents include: the theory and application of electric network, the theoryand application of electromagnetic field, modern measurement techniques ofelectromagnetism, electromagnetic environment and electromagnetic compatibility,new electromagnetic techniques, new generation technique and energy storagetechnique, biological electromagnetic theory and application, newelectrical technique.

4. Educationgoal

Bachelor’s degree: degree recipientsshould possess strong mathematics foundation, good foundation of management andhumanities and social science, comprehensive language ability. The recipientsmaster the basic technology theory of subject and possess the ability to acquire newknowledge and to practice. They can apply computers very skillfully andunderstand the development of subject. They have the ability to fit the job andto do the research, development and management in the practical work. Aftergraduation, they can take part in some works related with electric powerengineering which is as system design, operation control, informationmanagement, development and economy management.

Master’s degree: the degree recipientsshould possess strong theory and knowledge of the subject of electric powerengineering. They understand the tend of development and the currentsituation of domestic and international academic. They have the ability to doresearch, professional job by themselves. Also, they have rigorous research attitudeand strict work style. They have good ethics of scientific research and mastera foreign language expertly. After graduation, they can take part in some workslike research, teaching, technology development and management in the utilitiesof research, education and companies.
