Undergraduate Program for Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering

AMajor profile

The specialty of Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering was built in 2001. Nowadays, there are one staffroom (the water resources staffroom) and two special laboratories (the hydraulics laboratory, and the hydrology and water resources laboratory) belonging to it. The specialty is affiliated to the first-level discipline of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering, which was honored with the Key Subjects at the Provincial Level, and has been authorized to award masters degree of five second-level disciplines: Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering, Hydrology and Water Resources, Hydraulics and River Dynamics, Hydraulic Structure Engineering, and Harbor, Coastal and Offshore Engineering; besides, it has the authorized field of awarding engineering masters degree of water conservancy engineering under the first-level discipline.

1、Teaching objectives

The specialty aims to produce senior engineering elites, who possess strong knowledge of natural science and humanity, more powerful application ability of computer, foreign language, economy and management, solid elementary knowledge of hydrology, water resources and water environment, and can work at hydrology, water resources or environmental protection in many fields, such as reconnaissance, design, planning, management, education, academic research, and so on.

After their graduation, the students can work for those sectors relevant to water resources, such as water conservancy, energy, transportation, urban construction, agriculture and forestry, environmental protection, etc., engaged with design, construction, reconnaissance, planning, management, forecasting, technical analysis, education, academic research, and so on.

3、Specifications of professional training

Basic requirements

The undergraduates in this specialty mainly study the required basic theory and knowledge of measure and hydrogeology, gathering and processing of hydrologic information, prediction and prevention of water disaster, assessment and protection of water quality, planning and operation management of hydro projects, and water management; master systematical knowledge of hydrology, water resources, and water environment, trained with engineering drawing, computing, experimenting, testing, and the approaches to project design, operation management, and scientific researches; possess the basic ability to analyze and resolve practical problems, and can be engaged with scientific researches, organization and management.

Graduates should be with the following knowledge, abilities and quality:

1having strong fundamental theory and knowledge of mathematics, physics, computer, foreign language, engineering mechanics, hydraulics, meteorology and hydrogeology.

2mastering systematically the basic professional theoretic knowledge, including the basic theory and knowledge of engineering survey, hydrological forecast, hydrological statistics and analytical calculation, gathering and processing of hydrological information, assessment and management of water resources, survey and assessment of water environment, etc.

3mastering the fundamental ability of engineering planning, reconnaissance, design and management.

4establishing the idea of sustainable development, be familiar with national policies, rules and regulations.

5knowing about the cutting-edge and development trend of hydrology, water resources and water environment.

6having strong capacity of investigation, decision-making, organization, management, and self-learning, innovation, as well as the elementary ability of doing scientific researches and practical works.

Higher requirements:

If the basic requirements are met, some excellent students, who have ample energy and steady fundamental theory and basic skills, would be expected to obtain the following knowledge and abilities:

1attending some extended courses, including sustainable exploitation of water resources, water environment carrying capacity, computational fluid dynamics, etc.

2having better capacity to analyze and resolve problems, and to undertake scientific researches, by means of joining teachers’ research teams or practicing at the practice bases.

3taking part in science and technology innovation activities, composing scientific research reports and academic papers.

4participating in various academic competitions (such as mathematical modeling, electronic design, mechanical creation design, English speech and comprehensive application ability, art design, etc.), by which they can get strong capacity of investigation, study, decision-making, organization, management, obtain knowledge and information processed by themselves, and improve self-learning ability and innovation spirit.

5attending interdisciplinary courses, in order to get compounded capacity made up of  multi-major and multi-knowledge.
