Undergraduate Program for Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering

Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering is a specialty that researches on the floods and droughts prevention and control by means of artificial measures, the theory and technology of planning and design of hydro projects, project assessment, construction management, and those problems relevant to them. It is an important specialty in relation to the domestic construction of hydro projects, the industry and agriculture production, as well as the steady and sustainable development of the national economy.

The specialty of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering in Kunming University of Science and Technology was built in 1974, including many fields in hydro projects and channel improvement, such as reconnaissance, planning, design, construction, supervision, operation management, water resources planning, etc. There are three teaching and research divisions in this specialty right now: the hydropower staffroom, the soil mechanics staffroom, and the water resources staffroom.

This specialty was honored with the Key Subjects at the Provincial Level, and has been authorized for masters degree granting under the first-level discipline, being able to grant maters degree of five second-level disciplines: Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering, Hydrology and Water Resources, Hydraulics and River Dynamics, Hydraulic Structure Engineering, and Harbor, Coastal and Offshore Engineering. Besides, it has the authorized field of awarding engineering masters degree of water conservancy engineering under the first-level discipline.

There are several special laboratories belonging to the specialty, such as Hydraulics laboratory, Soil mechanics laboratory, River dynamics laboratory, etc.

The teaching staff consists of 25 teachers, including 6 professors, 7 associate professors, and 10 lecturers, of whom 7 teachers with doctoral degree, 18 with masters degree.

1、Teaching objectives

The specialty aims to produce senior engineering elites, who possess fundamental theoretical knowledge and strong technique, can work for water conservancy or hydropower sectors in many fields, such as design, construction, reconnaissance, planning, management, academic research, and so on.

2、Career fields  

After their graduation, the students can work for those sectors relevant to hydro projects, such as water conservancy, hydropower, industrial and civil architecture, traffic engineering, railway engineering, etc., engaged with design,  construction, reconnaissance, planning, management, academic researches, and so on.

3、Specifications of professional training

Basic requirements

The undergraduates in this specialty mainly study the required basic theory and knowledge of mathematics, mechanics and architectural structure, trained with humanity, foreign language, computer technique, engineering drawing, and the approaches to project design, construction and scientific researches, possessing the basic ability to be engaged with design, construction, reconnaissance, planning, management and research of hydro projects.

Graduates should be with the following knowledge, abilities and quality:

1having strong fundamental knowledge of natural science and social science in economy, management and humanity.

2mastering systematically the basic professional theoretic knowledge, including the basic theory and knowledge of engineering mechanics, hydraulics, rock and soil mechanics, engineering geology, engineering survey, engineering hydrology, water conservancy economy, etc.

3mastering the fundamental theory, elementary knowledge and basic skills of structural designing of hydro projects.

4mastering the skills of reconnaissance, planning, design, construction and management of hydro projects.

5having relatively strong ability of computer and foreign languages.

6having the skills necessary to hydro projects, such as surveying and drawing, map-making, computing, experimenting and testing.

7mastering the methods of literature research and data query, and having the elementary ability of doing scientific researches and practical works.

8be familiar with the policy, rules and regulations relevant to the construction and management of hydro projects, knowing about the cutting-edge and development trend of this specialty.

Higher requirements:

If the basic requirements are met, some excellent students, who have ample energy and steady fundamental theory and basic skills, would be expected to obtain the following knowledge and abilities:

1attending some extended courses, including elastic mechanics and the basis of finite element, foundation treatment and slope reinforcement, the topic of sluice structures high velocity flow,  the topic of reinforced concrete structure, operation and management of water conservancy project, the structure reliability and engineering design, in order to have strong knowledge in solid mechanics, hydrodynamics, computer application and engineering practice.

2having better capacity to analyze and resolve problems, and to undertake scientific researches, by means of joining teachers’ research teams or practicing at the practice bases for half a year.

3participating in various academic competitions and science and technology innovation activities, composing scientific research reports and academic papers, by which they can get strong capacity of investigation, study, decision-making, organization, management, obtain knowledge and information processed by themselves, and improve self-learning ability and innovation spirit.
